This is a huge issue at present. It mostly has to do with illegal immigration from countries south of our border. People are coming across the border illegally at an alarming rate and have been doing so for many years. It is estimated over eleven million illegal aliens are here.
Most of them are very hard workers and are trying to live the human dream that we all have and that is they like us want to earn a good wage so that they can live a good life where they can raise their children in a decent place. Live in a free country in a land of opportunity and possible success and better health. Some of these immigrants are the scum of the earth but most are not.
The one thing that I have noticed over the last several months is that how the most of us can get up on our high horses and stand on our soap boxes and expound how very, very important it is for these illegal aliens to get their U.S. citizenship and learn all about U.S. history and her national language and songs and so forth.
On the surface that all sounds very patriotic and on the surface learning these things makes sense whenever anyone wants to be a citizen of any country anywhere. However, when I think about myself and my family members and my neighbors and when hear and see thousands of strangers on TV and on the street I cannot help but wonder just how many of them know the American pledge of Allegiance, how many of them could name more than a couple of our U.S. Presidents, how many of them could name their own state’s Governor, or list the nine U.S. Supreme court justices, or how many of them speak or read or write ‘good’ basic English, or just how many of all them could pass the American citizenship test that we all insist that others must pass, or how many of us know anything about our American History or how much of that history is in anyway related to us and how it should be meaningful to us.
I come away thinking that probably not one person that I know could pass that citizenship test and probably only a couple of us could name every state capital or U.S. President.
I think that the old way of becoming a citizen of the U.S. should be thrown away and a new way of becoming one should be worked out and put into its place. I think that we must realize that the old way is no longer the best way to become a citizen and that there is a much better way to do that.
I think that yes everyone needs to learn English to a certain level of proficiency because that is the only sure way that anyone here can make all opportunities available to themselves. Other than that though I think that the only other thing necessary is for that person that wants to be a citizen must swear his or her own personal allegiance to the USA and promise to be the best American citizen that he or she can be.
That is all of the requirements needed and that person would be a citizen of the U.S. of America in short order. We then could stop acting out this ridicules charade of how great we are and we could all go about being the best U.S. citizens that we could possibly be and life for all of us and them would move along nicely and more effectively for all of us.
We could save a lot of money that we spend on immigration and making people citizens and the like and that money could be better utilized elsewhere where it is sorely needed.
Why is it so important to us to make people learn things about our own country that we didn’t care to know about ourselves when we were going to school? Why is it so important for these aliens to know about things that our own children and our own parents don’t know about and don’t want to know about anyhow? Why can’t we make it easier for people that want to be hard working Americans citizens like us, citizens? Why the most of them would be better citizens than a lot of us that have been here for years and years. Why not make it easy for them, perhaps, if we would perhaps they will make things easier for us over the long haul. What do you think?

However, regarding U.S. history, The pledge of allegience, and National anthem...maybe the issue shouldn’t be whether or not an immigrant requesting citizenship should study/learn...The issue should be why ALL u.s. citizens are not learning or haven’t the knowledge.
Again, we come back to citizen laziness., apathy, individualism. ”why should I bother learning about my politicans, they won’t listen to me or it’s their job to know me.”
The pledge of allegience and national anthem being removed from schools, etc due to seperation of Church and State is wrong..I understand the seperation, but how the hell can you remove the basis of your country? Dollar bills say ”in God we Trust”, should they be pulled from circulation as not to offend as well?but the point isn’t the school..it’s the parents..Why haven’t parents taken te responsibility in teaching their children what the school is no longer allowed?
just for grins, here is a sample U.S. citizenship exam from the U.S. govt site:

Everyone should learn their country’s history..If not history will b forgotten and repeated. As for government issues/politics...anyone who doesn’t keep up with their community or national politics, unfortunatly will have no grounds are defending the rights that should be guarenteed..However being a citizen guarentees nothing..If you don’t know the rulkes, you’ll never know you’re ”losing”..you’ll never be able to defend yourself and your community.
